Course and Unit Rules

Courses and units may have specific requirements which must be met before you can enrol. These might be pre- or co-requisites or special requirements you have to fulfil. If you enrol in a unit with rules, you must meet those criteria or your enrolment in that unit will be "INVALID". If you have already completed (passed) a unit or an equivalent you can not enrol in the unit again.

Read through the Course and Unit Search entries for your course and units carefully.

An example of unit rules

An example of a unit with rules is 100178.1 - Teaching English as Second Language in K-6 Mainstream Classes, which specifies:

Equivalent Units
A2525 Teaching English as a Second Language (Primary)’

This means you will not be able to enrol in 100178.1 if you have completed A2525.

This unit also has rules about course enrolment and other special requirements:

Special Requirements Prerequisites
This unit is only available to students who are enrolled in education course codes 10302 , 2021X, 2111X only. Students must have attended an approved child protection workshop and submitted a Prohibited Employment Declaration prior to undertaking professional experience placements in schools and early childhood centres.’

This means that you must be enrolled in one of the specified courses to enrol in this unit. You must also submit a Prohibited Employment Declaration and evidence of your attendance at a child protection workshop to a Student Centre before you may attend professional experience placements.

Pre-requisites

A pre-requisite is a course or unit which you must have completed to be allowed to enrol in another course or unit. This will ensure that all students have a similar level of understanding of the topics in the course or unit.

Co-requisites

A co-requisite is a course or unit which should be studied in the same teaching session as another course or unit. This will ensure that all students in a course or unit are studying the same topics at the same time.

  • achieving the specified minimum credit points
  • completing all unit sets
  • meeting all special requirements e.g. clinical placement, Criminal Record Check.

Excess credit point rules

You may not enrol in more than a standard full-time load, which is 40 credit points per session, without permission from your Head of Program. This is to ensure that you are attempting a manageable study load.

Campus location rules

You must enrol in units on your home campus only, unless studying at other campuses is part of the course structure. You may be allowed to study on other campuses if you have approval from your Head of Program. If you enrol in a unit taught at another campus, this is where you must sit your examination for the unit. This allows UWS to manage the resources of each campus adequately.

Adding units after week 2

Under UWS policy, you may not add units to your program after week 2 of the teaching session. This is to ensure that you do not miss too much of the unit material to fully understand the subject.

Applying for a rule waiver

If you believe that there is a reason why a course or unit rule should be set aside for your enrolment in that course or unit, you must submit a Rule Waiver Request form (available online or any Student Centre).

  1. Complete the form, ensuring that you do not leave any sections blank.
  2. Discuss your request with your Course Advisor or Head of Program. They must sign the form before you submit it. A Head of Program must sign a request to waive the rule about enrolling in more than 40 credit points.
  3. Submit the form to your local Student Centre. The Student Centre staff will advise you how to proceed with your enrolment.

An email authorising a rule waiver from your Head of Program will be accepted in place of a signature if it is attached and lodged with the Rule Waiver Request form.
